Consonants

Sounds represented by an ISO 646 letter in IPA but rarely used in IAL

  • /c/
  • /q/
  • /y/

Consonants having no ISO 646 representation in IPA

Some consonants found in several IALs are not represented by an ISO 646 letter in IPA. Three have a single letter in IPA, one of these has an widespread alternative

  • /ʃ/ (U+0283, IPA 134)
  • /ʒ/ (U+0292, IPA 135)
  • /ɡ/ (U+0261, IPA 110) = g (U+0067)

Four are affricates, and have two letters in IPA, they can often be written decomposed:

  • /t͡s/ = /ts/
  • /t͡ʃ/ = /tʃ/; Note: Polish distinguishes between them
  • /d͡z/ = /dz/; Note: Polish distinguishes between them
  • /d͡ʒ/ = /dʒ/

That leaves two characters that are not in ISO 646: ʃ, ʒ.

They can be encoded with c, q, y.

ILA-2015 uses:

  • c = /ʃ/
  • y = /ʒ/
