German chancellor Merkel in 2008: "... gestern die Duma und heute der russische Präsident Abchasien und Südossetien anerkannt haben. Der russische Präsident hat dies vor kurzem unterzeichnet. Dies widerspricht nach meiner und, so glaube ich, unserer Auffassung dem Prinzip der territorialen Integrität – einem grundlegenden Prinzip des internationalen Völkerrechts. Das ist deshalb absolut nicht akzeptabel."
